When Black Friday Comes…

[ad#Google Adsense 468×60 White]

I have been bombarded with lots of Black Friday Deals emails today, from Amazon to loads and loads of Internet Marketers, and Steely Dan’s Black Friday has been stuck in my head all day.

Steely Dan - Katy Lied (1975)

So, I thought I’d look for a Steely Dan video on YouTube, and kinda like this live version:

Black Friday, from the 1975 album Katy Lied.

Am I the only one who think that Donal Fagen deserves a cameo appearance in Twilight, or True Blood?

Great Crowded House Songs – Live

My CD player currently holds three of my Crowded House CDs:

  • Crowded House (1986) – with great songs like Don’t Dream It’s Over and Hole In The River
  • Temple Of Low Men (1988) – with the classic Into Temptation
  • Together Alone (1993) – with Pineapple Head and In my Command

The first two were produced by Mitchell Froom, who also has producer credits for artists like Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt, and the third one by Youth, from the band Killing Joke. Continue reading Great Crowded House Songs – Live

Hothouse Flowers – People

In that same Boxing Day sale that I mentioned yesterday I also bought 3 Hothouse Flowers CDs. This Dublin band with its soulful singer Liam O’Maonlai offer a mix of bombastic rock and soulful folk and even gospel music. White gospel music, without the Church references. And with a lot of acoustic elements in their music too.

Lifted from obscurity by similarly passionate voice Bono from U2, they landed a record deal on Polygram but never managed to reach a very wide audience. But their concerts are a combination of folky gospel rock and progressive rock ballads.

Here is a YouTube video of a very sensitive yet very soulful song “Older We Get” from their 1988 debut album “People”: Continue reading Hothouse Flowers – People

Donald Fagen – Morph The Cat

Remember Steely Dan? I had heard of them as a kid, but really got interested in them when two guys from my class in High School were listening to them a lot. Intelligent jazzy pop music by Walter Becker and … Donald Fagen. You may remember Donald from his two solo albums The Nightfly (with radio hits I.G.Y. and New Frontier) and Kamakiriad.

If you are interested in a quick overview of The Nightfly, then you should check out this YouTube video, which plays short snippets of all songs:

Black Eyed Peas – I Got A Feeling

What I am listening to right now? I Got A Feeling, by The Black Eyed Peas – from THE E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies). Well, I am not really listening to it – my wife is. She’s playing it loud on the speakers, so I paused my Hot House Flowers CD to listen to it too. She’s really gotten quite hooked on the music of will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and Fergie.
